Space Archeology

NASA has recently begun to support research projects that use satellite imagery to locate evidence of ancient civilizations to address questions about how and where they lived. AGS scientists are collaborating with academic partners to analyze a large collection of hyperspectral imagery from Brazilian Amazon forests. These maps are helping archaeologists assess whether pre-Columbian native settlements were widespread, or limited to a few small areas. It’s a controversial topic with big implications for Amazon forests; evidence of extensive settlements could show that the rainforest is capable of recovering from vast deforestation.
