Climate and Weather
At AGS, the role of the earth's climate is important on several projects. Climate and climate change influence ecosystem condition and affect human activities and management practices. Historical data (observed and model), regional weather patterns, climatic trends, and projected scenarios serve as drivers in biogeochemical modeling (i.e., DNDC), influence rangeland condition, affect the state of soils and ecological processes, plays a role in land cover/use change, and are important to aquatic integrity and invasive species dynamics.

Therefore we have a diverse set of backgrounds that includes expertise in:
synoptic meteorology
model parameterization
automated data mining, database construction, & interpolation
measuring differences between climatic drivers vs. management practices and understanding interactions and impacts
Climate data are also useful guidance in web-based decision support systems, as temporal trends and spatial variability influence decision-making and management strategies on agricultural lands and aquatic systems.
AGS is developing a web-based suite of geospatial weather and climate data products for epidemiological research and other related environmental health topics. Products will be tailored toward end users, routinely managed, easy-to-use, and available at a variety of scales. Such data should be a welcomed addition to studies that aim toward understanding climate controls on vector-borne diseases.
Other potential future work related to environmental health includes studying localized air quality as a function of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The ABL is direct contact with the earth's surface where its diurnal growth and suppression highly controls local air dispersion and transport of particulate matter and pollution. Emissions (natural and anthropogenic) play a role in the earth's energy budget, weather system development and intensity, local air quality, health, and climate. It is important to monitor emissions (i.e., GHG) and understand their consequences on human health and the
environment.
