Several AGS projects involve assessing the environmental impacts of
different land-use management practices performed in forestry
operations, in particular their consequences on carbon (C)
sequestration and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Significant
investments are now being made by forestry groups in assessing C
sequestration in forest systems due to the potential for trading
carbon credits coupled with significant environmental benefits through
improved environmental conditions.
Example projects include
- Mapping secondary vegetation in Brazil and the African tropics
- Quantifying forest disturbance and storm damage in the northeast USA
- Modeling alternative management strategies for sequestering carbon
and minimizing release of N2O, CH4 and NO from forest lands
- Verifying measurements and calculations of changes in terrestrial
carbon stocks
